Breast jobs beat out nose surgery for first time

More people than ever got cosmetic plastic surgery in the United States in 2006, with breast enlargements the most popular procedure, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported Thursday.

Nearly 11 million cosmetic plastic surgery operations were performed in the United States in 2006, up by 7 percent from 2005, the group said.

It also said more than 5.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed last year, mostly removal of tumors.

The most popular cosmetic choice was breast augmentation, with 329,000 reported in 2006. This is the first time “breast jobs” have passed nose reshaping surgery, performed on 307,000 people in 2006.

Liposuction followed in a close third place, with 302,000 procedures.

The group reported an 8 percent rise in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as injections to fill out wrinkles, with more than 9 million such operations. Botox treatments were by far the most common, with more than 4 million treatments in 2006.

The number of women willing to go under the knife to improve their looks has doubled in two years, according to research.

Around a third say they are ‘favourably disposed’ to having a little work done to improve on what nature has given them.

The finding reflects a growing acceptance of cosmetic surgery, fuelled by TV shows such as Nip/Tuck, Extreme Makeover and Ten Years Younger which have ‘desensitised’ attitudes to radical procedures.

An estimated 690,000 procedures will be carried out this year, a 40 per cent increase on last year and 240 per cent higher than 2001. (more…)

Plastic surgeons have criticised a company for running the world’s first cosmetic surgery “superdraw”.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) accused Europa International of “plumbing new depths”.

It said the company was using marketing gimmicks to attract customers to surgery abroad.

But John Babbage, co-founder of the Prague-based company, said there was no difference between somebody winning surgery, and paying for it. (more…)

Cosmetic surgery is altering not just how people look but how they feel by changing perceptions of middle age, a study showed on Monday.

Global research group AC Nielsen surveyed people in 42 countries and found 60 percent of Americans, the world’s biggest consumers of cosmetic surgery and anti-aging skincare, believe their sixties are the new middle age.

On a global scale, three out of five consumers believed forties was the new thirties. (more…)

But men who end up in the plastic surgeon’s chair often say they don’t think they look as good as they feel, according to doctors. Some patients are fresh off a divorce or looking for a competitive edge in an office full of young bucks. Others are inspired by wives who have had successful procedures–or are kind enough to ask why their husbands’ once-smooth brows now appear permanently furrowed.

From 2000 to 2005, there was a whopping 44% increase in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures among men, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. While the jump in demand isn’t unique to the gender, doctors say it speaks to many men’s desire to boost their looks–often through quickie treatments that don’t cause a lot of bruising or require lengthy recovery times.

Think you’ve seen it all when it comes to cosmetic surgery?

Look more closely. Eyelash transplant surgery wants to become the new must-have procedure for women — and the occasional man — convinced that beauty is not so much in the eye of the beholder as in front of the eye itself.

Using procedures pioneered by the hair loss industry for balding men, surgeons are using “plug and sew” techniques to give women long, sweeping lashes once achieved only by glued on extensions and thick lashings of mascara.

And just like human hair — for that is the origin — these lashes just keep on growing.

Less than 10 percent of adults in the US has ever had some type of cosmetic surgery, yet almost twice as many hope to do so at some point in the future, a survey shows.

The results suggest that trends have changed significantly since the 1960s and 1970s when cosmetic surgery was “rarely talked about,” Jeff Knezovich, executive vice president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery (AACS), which sponsored the survey, told Reuters Health. Today, the topic has become a “dinner table conversation,” he said.

“People are becoming more aware of cosmetic surgery and its benefits,” Knezovich said, noting that an individual’s change in appearance may make them feel better, which can consequently lead to their increased performance.

Elvia Rabinor said she hadn’t seriously considered plastic surgery until her daughter, Lauren-Beth Kassinger, asked her about it.

“She called me and said, ‘What are you doing this next week? How about getting your nose done?’” Rabinor said.

Plastic surgeons say this mother-daughter team is an example of a growing trend — friends or relatives going under the knife together.

According to 2005 statistics released by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 34 percent of facial plastic surgeons reported an increase in patients getting plastic surgery with a partner.

NEW YORK (Reuters) — A large study has found that women with breast implants show a lower-than-average risk of breast cancer, adding to evidence that silicone implants do not contribute to the disease.

In a study of more than 24,000 women who underwent breast augmentation in the 1970s and 1980s, Canadian researchers found that the women had a 43 percent lower rate of breast cancer compared with the general population. They also showed a lower-than-average risk of developing cancer of any kind.

The findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer, echo those of past studies showing that silicone-gel implants do not appear to be a cancer risk.
