My thoughts about cosmetic and plastic surgery

Modern medicine offers women titanium-coated breast implants

Source: Pravda.ru
If a woman decides to enhance her breasts with silicone implants, she must bear in mind the fact that they may leak and lead to severe complications. Until recently it was considered that saline implants were the only alternative to silicone ones. They are relatively safe, but they make breasts look like bags of water.

Modern medicine is developing, new technologies appear very fast nowadays. Two other models of breast implants are to enter the market after the tests are finished. They will be titanium-coated or gel-filled implants. Specialists say, such implants are as safe as saline ones, and their cosmetic effect and comfort is equal to silicone ones. In addition, there are non-surgical ways of breast enhancement. They are rather efficient, albeit temporal. Japanese scientists suggest another variant: they make breasts look bigger as the stomach becomes smaller.

Breast jobs beat out nose surgery for first time

More people than ever got cosmetic plastic surgery in the United States in 2006, with breast enlargements the most popular procedure, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported Thursday.

Nearly 11 million cosmetic plastic surgery operations were performed in the United States in 2006, up by 7 percent from 2005, the group said.

It also said more than 5.2 million reconstructive plastic surgery procedures were performed last year, mostly removal of tumors.

The most popular cosmetic choice was breast augmentation, with 329,000 reported in 2006. This is the first time “breast jobs” have passed nose reshaping surgery, performed on 307,000 people in 2006.

Liposuction followed in a close third place, with 302,000 procedures.

The group reported an 8 percent rise in minimally invasive cosmetic procedures such as injections to fill out wrinkles, with more than 9 million such operations. Botox treatments were by far the most common, with more than 4 million treatments in 2006.

More evidence breast implants pose no cancer risk

Source: CNN

NEW YORK (Reuters) — A large study has found that women with breast implants show a lower-than-average risk of breast cancer, adding to evidence that silicone implants do not contribute to the disease.

Breast Cancer
In a study of more than 24,000 women who underwent breast augmentation in the 1970s and 1980s, Canadian researchers found that the women had a 43 percent lower rate of breast cancer compared with the general population. They also showed a lower-than-average risk of developing cancer of any kind.

The findings, published in the International Journal of Cancer, echo those of past studies showing that silicone-gel implants do not appear to be a cancer risk.

Seeking better breast implants

Doctors experiment with ‘gummy bear’ fillers, titanium coatings

Cohesive silicone gel implants, such as this one made by McGhan, a division of Inamed, are designed to avoid leaksMany women hoping for a more natural-looking alternative to saline breast implants were disappointed by the Food and Drug Administration’s recent decision to maintain the ban on silicone-gel-filled implants. But there may be other options on the market one day, as doctors continue their quest to find better ways to boost a woman’s bosom.

Among the most promising developments, they say, are cohesive silicone gel, leak-resistant implants with the consistency of a gummy bear and a new type of implant shell coating that may be less likely to cause inflammation and scarring in the surrounding breast tissue.

Silicone implants have been off the market for more than a decade, but last year the FDA gave its stamp of approval to a new generation of silicone implants — implants that are not yet available to the public.

The FDA never banned silicone breast implants, but when the government restricted their use for cosmetic purposes, most women were limited to saline implants.

The Cohesive Gel Breast Implant

Extraordinary Implant Promises to Revolutionize the Breast Augmentation and Reconstruction History

The Gummy Bear Implant has all the advantages of the traditional silicone implant but eliminates the two biggest problems: rupture and leakage. The semi-solid gel implants, called High-Strength Gel Implants, feel softer and more natural than saline implants, and unlike saline implants, they are less likely to wrinkle. The high-strength gel implants also differ from saline or standard silicone implants which leak if the implant shell is ruptured. Cutting into a high-strength gel implant is a little like cutting into a “gummy bear”.
